How to Verify Your HVAC Technician Is Licensed in Ontario Before They Touch Your Furnace

Most Ontario homeowners never ask whether the technician working on their furnace or water heater is actually licensed to do so. It's an easy thing to assume — they showed up in a branded truck, they're wearing a uniform, and they seem to know what they're talking about. Cooling and Refrigeration Licences (Regulated by Skilled Trades Ontario)

• 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic: Compulsory trade certificate for full installation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial cooling and geo-exchange systems.
  
• 313D Residential Air Conditioning Mechanic: Restricted compulsory trade licence limited strictly to residential air conditioning and heat pump systems.

How to Verify a Technician's TSSA Licence? 

The TSSA maintains a public directory of licensed gas technicians and contractors in Ontario. Verifying a licence takes less than two minutes: 

• Go to tssa.org 
• Navigate to the Fuels Safety section and find the licence verification tool. 
• Search by the technician's name, company name, or licence number. 
• Confirm the licence is active, the type is correct (G1 or G2 for residential gas work), and the name matches the person in front of you. 

Ask for the licence number before work begins. Every legitimate, licensed technician carries this and will provide it without hesitation. If a technician becomes defensive, evasive, or refuses - stop the interaction and find someone else. 

Red Flags That Suggest Unlicensed or Under-Qualified Work 

• The technician can't provide a licence number when asked. 
• The company has no verifiable TSSA registration and no established online presence. 
• The price is dramatically below any other quote you've received — unlicensed operators often compete on price because they have no licensing overhead. 
• The technician can't explain the work they're doing in clear technical terms. 
• You found them through an unmarked vehicle, a handwritten flyer, or an informal referral with no verifiable business details. 

What About Home Inspectors? Can They Red Tag Your Furnace? 

No. Home inspectors in Ontario are not licensed gas technicians and cannot legally issue a red tag. A home inspector may note concerns about your HVAC system in their inspection report and those concerns are worth following up on but they have no legal authority to shut off your gas, attach a red tag, or certify that a unit is unsafe under the TSSA framework. 

If a home inspector flags your furnace and recommends having it assessed by a licensed gas technician, that's appropriate and you should follow up. But the assessment, and any resulting red tag, must come from a TSSA-certified technician. 

How to Find a Legitimate Licensed HVAC Contractor in Ontario 

• Search the TSSA's licensed contractor directory directly at tssa.org before calling anyone. 
• Check Google Reviews, the BBB, and HomeStars for documented customer experiences. 
• Ask for the technician's licence number when you book any legitimate company will have it on file and be happy to provide it in advance. 
• Look for companies that have been operating in Ontario for several years and have verifiable business registrations. 
• Get at least two quotes for any work exceeding a few hundred dollars.
